Employee Stock Options: Simplified

Chances are you have had stock options at one point or another or know someone who has. The term ‘stock options’ refers to company stock incentives offered to company employees. The stock incentives may come in many different shapes and sizes but most basically, stock options grant the employee the right to purchase a certain number of company stock shares at a certain price on a certain date. If the company’s stock price increases, the employee’s options are worth more and, thus, the employee is incentivized to help the company continue to grow. Here we’ll explore two of the most common forms of stock options and their main differences. Read on to learn more about the basics of Incentive Stock Options (ISOs) and Non-Qualified Stock Options (NQSOs).

In Case You Missed It: The Coming Bear Market

“The Coming Bear Market” is the title of a recent article by economist Robert Shiller in which he discusses current economic and market conditions in the U.S. and compares them to prior times when markets declined. Shiller is notable for having published a book titled “Irrational Exuberance” in which he “predicted” the Great Recession, and he seems to have been predicting another one ever since. One thing that’s important to remember is that someone is always predicting bad things for the economy, but the reality of the markets is much messier. “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that others won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give others permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.” ~Marianne Williamson
