Get More from Your Credit Score

In today’s world, there are dozens of numerical expressions that make up one’s financial life. Credit scores are one example of those digital expressions, and are used to assess a person’s financial responsibility. It is widely understood that this score helps lenders decide whether or not to approve someone for credit cards and loans, but the significance of this number permeates much further than that. So, what exactly makes up your credit score? In this piece, we break down the composition of your credit score and share some simple ways you can get more from your score.

SAVE – SPEND – DONATE – INVEST

At Yeske Buie, we believe that money doesn’t buy a successful life, but an understanding of money is crucial to one. With financial literacy being a widely under-taught subject, the responsibility of teaching children and young adults about financial basics falls on families. To alleviate some of this pressure, we’ve put together a financial literacy program to help educate and facilitate conversations about money and finance. Additionally, the topic of financial literacy will be the crux of our next live webinar on Wednesday, April 18th at 11:00am PT / 2:00pm ET. We’ll be sharing more details about the webinar in upcoming emails and Digests but you can “reserve” your virtual seat today using this link.

Long-Term Care Aware

Long-term care is not a one-time need. Rather, it is a “continuum of care” that starts at home and advances to an assisted living community or nursing home. No matter where one falls on this continuum of care, the costs can be significant. Many financial experts agree that long-term care is one of the most significant financial strains you or your family may face as you age. With this in mind, we explore the topic of long-term care by sharing our thoughts on a few of the most common questions regarding the care.

In Case You Missed It: Hello Volatility My Old Friend…

As was surely inevitable, volatility has returned to the markets after an historically quiescent couple of years. As this was being written, markets in Europe were down nearly 5% after a similar drop in the US on Monday. As a result of these fluctuations, many investors found themselves asking, “What should we make of this and what, if anything, should we do?”. In this piece, we answer these two questions and share how we factor in fluctuations from  inevitable economic volatility into our Client portfolios.

Required Minimum Distributions

February marks the beginning of our annual process of distributing our Clients’ Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs) from their IRAs. Now that Schwab has released their annual RMD report, the Financial Planning Team is reviewing each IRA from which an RMD is required to ensure enough cash is available for the distribution. TheLiveBigWay® Digest – Crypto Craze

What is Bitcoin Actually Worth?

Having risen from $1,000 per coin to a high of nearly $20,000 in the past 12 months (although as we write, it has fallen back to $11,000), Bitcoin has garnered more than a little attention and spawned a host of imitators. We recently came across a post by a gentleman who blogs under the name The Unassuming Banker that we think did a particularly nice job of both explaining what Bitcoin is and why it and the 1,400 other cryptocurrencies that have sprung into existence, whatever their current market value, have an intrinsic value of zero. We thought we’d share.

Saving for Retirement – It’s Never Too Early (or Too Late!)

At the top of nearly every list of financial New Year’s resolutions is the goal to “save more money”. For some, this means increasing general savings amounts. For others, this means putting away more money for retirement, specifically. When it comes to planning for retirement, time is one of the most important ingredients in a Client’s financial plan. The power of compound interest is the reason this is true – each additional compounding period available to a Client’s savings increases the growth prospects of those funds exponentially. Read more to find out how Yeske Buie helps its Clients use their time before retirement to take advantage of this principle.

Top Economy and Investing Post: The Coming Bear Market

“The Coming Bear Market” is the title of an article posted in October 2017 by economist Robert Shiller in which he discusses current economic and market conditions in the U.S. and compares them to prior times when markets declined. Shiller is notable for having published a book titled “Irrational Exuberance” in which he “predicted” the Great Recession, and he seems to have been predicting another one ever since. One thing that’s important to remember is that someone is always predicting bad things for the economy, but the reality of the markets is much messier. Staff Spotlight: Yusuf Abugideiri

Today in this space, we’d like to shine a spotlight on our longest-standing team member, Yusuf Abugideiri, who is in the midst of some exceptional personal and professional life events that we are excited to share with you. First and foremost, Yusuf and his wife, Maegan, are counting down the days until the arrival of their first born child! In the meantime, Ryan Klemm and the rest of our Financial Planning team are prepared to dive in and support our Clients’ needs during Yusuf’s time away. Stay tuned for an announcement (and pictures!) after Yusuf and Maegan meet their son.

In other (less life altering, but still good) news, Yusuf will be a member of the 2018 class of Schwab’s Executive Leadership Program. Employee Stock Options: Simplified

Chances are you have had stock options at one point or another or know someone who has. The term ‘stock options’ refers to company stock incentives offered to company employees. The stock incentives may come in many different shapes and sizes but most basically, stock options grant the employee the right to purchase a certain number of company stock shares at a certain price on a certain date. If the company’s stock price increases, the employee’s options are worth more and, thus, the employee is incentivized to help the company continue to grow. Here we’ll explore two of the most common forms of stock options and their main differences. Read on to learn more about the basics of Incentive Stock Options (ISOs) and Non-Qualified Stock Options (NQSOs).

The Health Insurance Marketplace

While the future of the Affordable Care Act is unclear, the health insurance marketplace is still available for 2018 coverage and the open enrollment window officially opened on November 1st. The deadline for enrollment is December 15th. Those intending to enroll are encouraged to start the process early this year, as the enrollment website will be off line every Sunday from 12:00am to 12:00pm and navigating the site may be more difficult than past years due to budget cuts. With this in mind, we offer a quick guide to the insurance marketplace to help you learn more about enrollment, potential savings, picking a plan and more.

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that others won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give others permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.” ~Marianne Williamson
