Beyond the Crypto Craze: The Rise of Blockchain Technology

Hardly a day goes by where we don’t see headlines about Bitcoin, the rise of cryptocurrencies, and the emerging technologies fueling the craze – we shared a post on the topic earlier this year titled “What is Bitcoin actually worth?”. Today, we’d like to take a deeper dive into the technology that supports Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies known as blockchain. The emergence of blockchain technology may be reminiscent of Buffalo Springfield’s famous song lyrics; “There’s something happening here. But what it is ain’t exactly clear.” Read on for a deeper look at what that something is, and why we as financial planners are paying attention to this disruptive technology.

Macro-Level Conference Learnings

A few weeks ago, our Financial Planning Team attended FPA’s Northern California Conference. We believe conferences like this one provide our team with the opportunity to gain macro-level insights on the current challenges and best practices in financial planning. We find that upon returning to the office, the conference learnings spark a curiosity to dive deeper into one or more topics, which oftentimes leads to robust conversations about applying these learnings with our Clients. Today, we share a few of this year’s conference highlights.

This May, nestled in the beautiful hills at Wolf Mountain Vineyard, Ryan and his fiancée Faith exchanged vows to become husband and wife. The 2018 Trends in Investing Survey

This year’s results of The 2018 Trends in Investing Survey have been released and in many ways, last year’s trends parallel this year’s findings. Specifically, the use of Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) has climbed again for the eighth consecutive year with 87% of surveyed advisors reporting that they currently use or recommend ETFs with Clients. Additionally, there was a new investment vehicle added to this year’s survey – cryptocurrencies – which advisors largely agreed are “an interesting concept to keep an eye on, but not invest in yet,” at best. Read on for more on the survey results including Dave’s thoughts on ETFs and cryptocurrencies.

Grounded Investing

At Yeske Buie, we believe there is a science to investing. Unfortunately, much of what passes for investment activity has little connection to this science. To some degree, this comes from the natural human desire to “beat the system,” to gain some special advantage, to find the secret short-cut. But at the end of the day, we believe success in investing is more about discipline than it is about beating the system by picking hot stocks or timing the market. With this in mind, we share eight common investment habits to avoid to maintain a grounded and disciplined approach to investing.

“Let’s Talk About the Big Book”

A friend recently shared with us an article from The Washington Post titled “Let’s Talk about the Big Book” that details all of life’s important documents that should be kept in one central location for easy access in the case of a death or an emergency. The article reminds us of a piece we have shared in the past – Assembling Your Financial First Aid Kit – and we feel that it adds another layer of detail that is valuable to consider. We’ve listed some of the highlights of the article here on our website – we hope you find the suggestions helpful!

With high school graduations upon us, the reality of college expenses like room and board, tuition, and supplies may be sinking in. While some of the state deadlines for the upcoming 2018-2019 school year have passed, it’s not too late for those who may have originally thought it wouldn’t make a difference to file the FAFSA for federal aid. Read on for resources related to filing FAFSA and considerations for financial aid options.

Yeske Buie in the Media: A Close Bond?

CNBC recently shared an article questioning Americans’ relationship with bond funds which they claim to be “America’s favorite investment.” The article argues that while bond funds have been growing in popularity due to their appeal as simple, cheap, and diversified nature, the projected increase in interest rates may make them a less desirable investment over the coming year. To gain a broader perspective on this argument, a number of prominent financial professionals including Dr. Dave Yeske shared their opinions with CNBC. In the Spirit of Financial Literacy Month

Earlier this week, three members of the Yeske Buie team hosted a live webinar on the topic of financial literacy – a recording of which is now available on our website. During the webinar, we shared our approach to financial literacy, an in-depth explanation of our financial literacy program, and practices that support financial success. As we explored this topic, we briefly touched on a number of concepts that we could easily spend an entire webinar unpacking. Today in this space – and in the spirit of promoting financial literacy! – we’d like to share more about some of these concepts.

  • A Practical Approach to Cashflow Complexities: Cash flow policies remove budgetary uncertainties and clarify the financial ripple effects of given alternatives while maintaining alignment with Client values.
  • A Jewel of Financial Tools: For those looking for trusted financial information, the CFPB offers a variety of reliable tools related to topics like getting an auto loan, owning a home, and information for students.
  • Cash Flow Trackers – How to Make Them Work for You: We take a look at one of the more popular cash flow tracking apps, Mint, and give our take on the service and on using cash flow trackers.

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that others won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give others permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.” ~Marianne Williamson
